Data serves as a crucial instrument for policymakers in addressing societal shifts and the everyday challenges the general population encounters. Recognizing this, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies in Luxembourg, STATEC, has initiated a collaboration with the University of Luxembourg’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT) to establish an internal Data Science Lab. This lab will concentrate on the creation and deployment of artificial intelligence tools aimed at bolstering STATEC’s mission in Luxembourg.

Utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technology presents a valuable opportunity to optimise the functionalities of national statistics offices globally. These technologies empower statisticians to efficiently process and analyze vast amounts of detailed information, commonly called big data. This enhanced processing capability enables the more efficient generation of official statistics, making the incorporation of AI/ML for big data processing a priority for statistical institutes worldwide. Luxembourg, including STATEC, actively embraces this global trend, positioning AI and ML integration as a key element within its innovation agenda. To further augment their AI capabilities, SnT will be assisting STATEC’s teams in extending beyond their foundational AI setup through the establishment of the Data Science Lab. The project consists of three elements:

  1. Scaling and sustaining STATEC’s AI activities
  2. Investigating innovative use cases
  3. Developing and implementing a tool to automate statistical processing

“Introducing robust AI tools into our data processing methodology will allow our statisticians to work more efficiently, promising to free up their expertise for statistical analysis,” says Dr Serge Allegrezza, Director General of STATEC. “The result of this will be stronger data for Luxemburgish policy makers to work from and more efficient processes for the citizens donating their time to us for our data collection activities.
