The Ministry of State, Department of Media, Connectivity and Digital Policy, together with the Ministry of Economy, the National Research Fund (FNR) and Luxinnovation, launched a collaborative call for projects. This initiative aims to provide companies and research institutions with a funding opportunity to exploit 5G communication technologies in their respective fields of research or activity.

The call for projects will take place in two phases. The first phase, which runs from 15 November 2023 to 9 February 2024, invites interested economic actors to submit their project proposals, including summaries, planned research, timetables and budgets.

After evaluation by the project partners, the selected proposals will move to the second phase, which will take place between 25 March and 23 May 2024. During this phase, a panel of external experts will examine the detailed project descriptions. The results will be released in October 2024, marking the start of the project's implementation.

Aligned with the priority sectors of the Luxembourg economy, the call focuses on four key themes: Smart Environment, Smart Cities, Industry 4.0 and Technologies. 5G communication technologies serve as powerful enablers for emerging applications such as data-driven decision-making, AI, IoT and automation, promising increased competitiveness and resilience.

Minister of Communications and Media Xavier Bettel affirms the government’s belief in the central role of 5G technologies in boosting productivity and innovation in various sectors of the Luxembourg economy.

Luxinnovation, through its CEO Sasha Baillie, will facilitate connections and collaboration between innovative companies and leading public research organisations.

Economy Minister Franz Fayot stressed the importance of public-private partnerships to foster innovation and technology adoption by businesses. Building on the success of previous joint calls, this initiative aims to boost the uptake of 5G technologies.

The application process will take place on the dedicated platform www.research-industry-collaboration.lu, managed by Luxinnovation since 2021. This platform will serve as a hub for submitting ideas and connecting with partners, thus fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Marc Schiltz, Director General of the FNR, highlights the key role of ongoing research in harnessing the societal, economic and technological benefits of 5G. By facilitating collaboration within the ecosystem, the aim is to accelerate breakthroughs and stimulate innovation in Luxembourg.
