‘Elements of AI’ is a MOOC (Massive Open Online Classroom) launched in 2018 by the University of Helsinki and the company Reaktor, aimed at making artificial intelligence (AI) accessible to all. Free and available in multiple languages, this online course removes financial and language barriers, allowing a global audience to become familiar with AI. This initiative is designed to demystify AI and enable anyone interested, regardless of previous experience, to understand the fundamental concepts and applications of AI.
Divided into six chapters, the course combines theory and practice, offering exercises suitable for beginners as well as the most advanced. Each chapter addresses a different aspect of AI, from the basics of algorithmic logic to advanced applications such as machine learning and neural networks. By integrating interactive exercises and practical case studies, the course ensures a thorough and concrete understanding of the topics covered. It also encourages learner engagement via an interactive platform for collaborative learning, where participants can discuss, ask questions and share ideas, enriching the learning experience.
WIDE ANDCO also supported this initiative, strengthening its impact and outreach to raise women’s awareness of artificial intelligence through professionals in the sector in Luxembourg. As a result of this collaboration with the Competence Centre of the University of Luxembourg and with the support ofInnovative Initiatives, priority was given to creating workshops and mentoring sessions for women, encouraging them to explore and engage in the field of AI. WIDE ANDCO organised two support groups, the first in collaboration with Marianne Bernou and Camille Saettel (among others) from LILLA, to share experiences and ethical considerations on the impact and practical applications of AI in the
field of legal and health. The second support group welcomed Marlène Gigant from MEDIATION and Jimmy Fischer from Luxembourg media & digital design centre for a hands-on and interactive workshop on AI tools essential to the marketing and communication professions.
Inclusion and diversity are crucial aspects of this initiative, which aims to balance representation in the technology sector by providing fair learning opportunities.
Since its launch, more than 600,000 people from 170 countries have followed this MOOC, demonstrating its success and global appeal. In 2020, the course received the UNESCO Prize for the Use of ICT in Education, a prestigious recognition that highlights its effectiveness and educational impact. This distinction highlights the importance of Elements of AI as an accessible and inclusive training model in the field of advanced technologies.
By raising awareness of AI issues among a wide audience, Elements of AI contributes to the democratisation of technological knowledge and a better understanding of the implications of AI technology in particular. This initiative plays a key role in preparing society for future AI challenges and opportunities. It also helps dispel myths and misunderstandings surrounding AI, encouraging a more balanced and informed perspective on its role and potential in our daily lives.
