This year signifies the University’s 20th anniversary, a moment to commemorate achievements and, most importantly, recognize the individuals who have played a vital role in the University’s success: Two decades committed to students, research, and society.

In August 2003, the Higher Education Act was passed in Parliament, marking the commencement of an exciting journey to establish Luxembourg’s sole public university. The University was envisioned to be research-focused, international, and multilingual. Its mission was to attract talent and provide higher education in areas of significance for the country and society, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of Luxembourg as a knowledge-driven society.

Two decades later, the University has remained steadfast in upholding these founding principles. What began as an academic startup has evolved into an internationally renowned research university with a distinct multilingual and interdisciplinary character, earning prominent positions in global university rankings. Presently, the University comprises 6,000 students, including 1,000 doctoral candidates, and serves an additional 1,000 individuals through continuing education programs, representing 130 nationalities. The University’s workforce consists of over 2,400 individuals, and its alumni network boasts 14,000 graduates employed both within Luxembourg and abroad.
