On June 14, the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, signalling a firm commitment to regulate AI systems in alignment with EU rights and values. The legislation aims to safeguard human rights, safety, privacy, transparency, and non-discrimination while promoting the adoption of trustworthy AI. Prohibited practices include social scoring, real-time remote biometric identification, predictive policing, and unregulated facial recognition.
Crucially, the Act empowers citizens by granting them the right to file complaints and obtain explanations regarding high-risk AI decisions that impact their fundamental rights. The EU AI Office will monitor the implementation of the AI rulebook.
Negotiations with the Council are underway to finalize AI legislation that will shape the future of AI regulation. This legislative initiative directly addresses citizens’ calls for human oversight, trustworthy AI systems, and using AI and translation technologies to bridge language barriers. Europe aims to establish a global precedent for responsible AI governance, ensuring its development aligns with democracy, fundamental rights, and the rule of law.
